Banned breeds in Indonesia

Our pet dogs are our faithful friends; we love them for their loyalty and companionship. However, some dog breeds are considered naturally aggressive and are banned for import in many countries around the world. Import of dog breeds such as Pit Bull, Tosa Inu, Cane Corso etc., are banned in several countries, including Australia, Germany, New Zealand and others.

Why are some dog breeds banned from import?

While most dog breeds are friendly and make excellent companions, some can be dangerous because of their strong jaws and aggressive nature. Historically, these breeds were bred for security and are capable of causing severe injury to people and animals. Dog attacks are not uncommon worldwide, and dog breeds with strong jaws are known to inflict more harm than other breeds.

Breed-specific legislation assumes that all strong breeds are dangerous and imposes a blanket ban on all dogs of the breed.

Banned breeds in Indonesia

Indonesia does not have breed-specific legislation and does not ban the entry of any dog breed into the country. However, aggressive dogs must be kept under control at all times. If your pet dog is a strong and aggressive breed, they must be on the lead at all times in public spaces.

Though Indonesia does not have breed-specific legislation, some dogs do not qualify to travel to the country.

• Puppies must be at least three months old before travelling. They must be healthy and fully vaccinated against rabies and other canine diseases.
• Pregnant and lactating pets are not allowed for import.
• Pet dogs and cats are not allowed for import in certain rabies-free areas of Indonesia: Madura, Bali, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Maluku, Irian Jaya, Kalimantan Barat and the islands in the Sumatran area.
